🚧 This week marks 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐙𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤, and we wanted to share a few safety reminders on how to keep our roadways safe whether you're driving, a passenger, walking, or working. 🚧 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - Be it your cellphone or another passenger, you should be fully focused on the road you're traveling on, the people and vehicles traveling that road, and any workers who may be present. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 - If there is construction or road work, there will be signs. Slow down, read them, and pay attention. They're there to keep everyone - travelers and workers - safe. 𝐎𝐛𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬 - Speed limits decrease in work zones while fines increase. Save a life, slow down and stay alert. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐲 - Construction, like life, is always changing and moving. Leave space between traveling vehicles and be prepared to stop quickly and suddenly.

Remember, it only takes a split second of distraction to cause a life-altering accident. Stay vigilant. Whether it's adjusting the radio, eating, or reaching for something in the backseat, every distraction increases the risk of a collision. 𝐁𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫? Poison Control can assist with bites or stings from local creatures in the event of poison or venomous bites/stings. Know the number 𝟏-𝟖𝟎𝟎-𝟐𝟐𝟐-𝟏𝟐𝟐𝟐, and save it in your phone to be prepared if there's ever an emergency! Your local responders work in tandem with Poison Control to help keep everyone safe no matter the incident. Knowing what to do in an emergency ahead of time can help you keep calm, level, and relay the important information to emergency responders to expedite our care for you. We're all here to keep our community safe, no matter the emergency.

After 18 years of dedicated service to our members, their families, and the Local April Guerrero is saying goodbye. As the long-time Office Manager April expertly managed the day-to-day administrative and accounting aspects of the Local's business allowing the elected VCPFA board to focus on the important labor relations, political and charities work on behalf of our members. In the last few years, April stepped into the role of VCPFA Insurance Administrator where she assisted members with administering VCPFA medical benefits while also overseeing administration of the Benefit Trust program and VCFD WOAF non-profit. April was recently offered a great career opportunity at a local public-sector education agency. We are sad to see her leave and will miss her deeply but we congratulate her and wish her the best of success in her new endeavor. Please feel free to drop by or call the Association office to wish April farewell.

Before the day is over we'd like to wish those that "keep the wheels turning" in an office a Happy Administrative Professionals Day! (pictured are the 3 responsible for our office at yesterday's golf tournament) We'd also like to wish our Admin Assistant, Amber well as this is her last week with us. Amber worked for VCPFA for a number of years and re-joined our team a year ago while on her extended stay back in California. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Fire Control Worker Zachary Gregson. He has succumbed to his injuries sustained from an off-duty motorcycle accident that occurred on July 15th, 2021. Zachary served on the Ventura County Fire Department’s Hand Crew with his final assignment as Dozer Swamper for Dozer-12. He leaves behind a loving family, a strong group of friends, and a grateful fire department. Zachary dedicated his life to helping others by fighting fires. In his last days, that spirit of service to others continued as he has donated his vital organs in a final act of selflessness. It is the family’s hope that his generous spirit will live on through this gift of life. Thank you to everyone who has supported, donated, and prayed for Zachary and his family over these last few days. We ask that you please continue to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Walking Into fire season like... ⬆️ As the weather seems to get warmer and warmer, your firefighters are gearing up for the challenges ahead. You’ll notice “Strike teams” of type 1 & type 3 engines (Teams of 5 engines with 3 to 4 person staffing) being deployed in and out of Ventura County to major fires. You’ll also see in future posts our members that deploy on federal and state wildland management teams, alongside with firefighters that deploy as a single resource. So stay tuned for future stories/posts. With these deployments your Ventura County Firefighters will back fill fire stations as we send members out to these incidents. Last week Academy 58 put in the work on the #VCFD burn props running scenario after scenario preparing for their week of “ride outs” in the field. This week all academy 58 recruits are riding alongside firefighters in the field learning first hand how to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. After this week they’ll return back to the academy for graduation and then they’ll be assigned to engine and truck companies during probation. It’s during this probationary period that your firefighters are tested daily, physically and mentally trained, and properly mentored on how to be successful in this career. This isn’t their last week to ask questions about the job, it’s a career of constant learning. However after this week they’ll be relied upon by their companies and the public to do the best job possible. Get out there and train! E41 testing out the TFT Blitzfire portable monitor, this new tool is making its way throughout the department for some R&D. Our training division leads the charge in bringing new equipment to the field & it’s your firefighters that put it to the test! This piece of equipment hooks up to the end of a hose line allowing a single firefighter to stretch the hose, carry the equipment, and start flowing water seamlessly. This week is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, where we recognize those in an extremely thankless job. Our dispatch center dubbed, Ventura, dispatch all fire and EMS responses for us in #VenturaCounty They answer the call and get the wheels rolling in order to try and save someone’s life, often without ever knowing the outcome. Their training, professionalism and passion for the job are heard everyday. Thank you for answering the call day and night. The driver and only occupant made it safely out of the vehicle, however from this photo that might not be your first assumption. Engine 45, 47 & Quint 44 responded to this semi truck on fire in #SimiValley Firefighters acted quickly pulling multiple hose lines and knocked down the fire within a couple minutes. There are a lot of factors to consider with this call such as: location of the occupants, roadway safety, water source and securing a loaded semi that was going uphill. All these hazards are taken care of within minutes of firefighters getting on scene. These members choose to be apart of a centuries old tradition of honoring our members, participating in civic events and honoring the fallen. Let’s congratulate another promotion! Captain Johnathan Tolle, currently assigned as our COVID Officer in the EMS division. He has served throughout the county from fire stations 43, 32, 36, 34, and Air Unit as a full time Crew Chief. After serving the county for nine years as a firefighter/paramedic, we are happy to now watch him serve as a captain. Beyond his normal duties, Captain Tolle has served on our air unit and apparatus cadres. These separate cadres are made up of firefighters who take time away from their normal schedule to help keep the wheels rolling within that specialty. The air unit cadre develops the training for the aviation unit, flight paramedics, crew chief, and search & rescue teams who work either full time or as a collateral assignment. He is also a part of the apparatus cadre, which has designed our future medic squads being added to the fleet. #MotivationMonday Today we’d like to highlight our Firefighter/Paramedics and their critical role in the EMS system and their dedication to providing the communities they serve the highest level of care possible. Your Ventura County Firefighters provide prehospital care as EMTs (BLS) or as paramedics (ALS). We specialize in a multitude of different fields and being a paramedic is absolutely another speciality one can obtain after getting hired or have prior to applying. Most come to us with prior experience or they voluntarily sign up to go to paramedic school after probation. Schooling in total consists of a year of classroom learning, hospital rotations and a field internship. Beyond this training our firefighters in Ventura County “Upgrade” from a level I to a level II paramedic by working under the direct supervision of a senior Firefighter-Paramedic. Earning the status of a level II Medic allows that individual to work as the sole paramedic with an Engineer & Captain (EMTs). Firefighter-paramedics have all the normal responsibilities of a firefighter with the added responsibility of providing advanced life support to the public. This consist of medical intubation, starting IVs, pushing/handling of narcotics etc... After being a qualified paramedic they are able to work in the aviation unit, Tactical Emergency Medicine, squads and the list goes on. We are extremely fortunate to have these members on our team when those critical calls go out. Let’s congratulate our newest promotion of the year! First up Captain Steve Chandler, Currently assigned to Truck-54 in Camarillo. He has served throughout the county from fire stations: 41, 26, 33, 44, 43, 28 & 46. After serving the county for 14 years from the rank of firefighter to engineer we are happy to now watch him serve as a captain. Beyond his normal duties, Captain Chandler has served on our auto extrication and S.C.B.A cadres. These separate cadres are made up of firefighters who take time away from their normal schedule to help keep the wheels rolling. Our auto extrication or Auto X cadre teaches our trainees how to properly secure vehicles that have been in accidents and how to use the “jaws of life” to cut patients out of cars. The S.C.BA ( Self contained breathing apparatus) cadre also teaches our newest recruits how to operate and become familiar using our equipment used in firefighting operations. They also provide training and inspections on equipment throughout the department. These staff rides are an opportunity for firefighters, engineers, captains and fire chiefs to learn about the horrible incidents that take the lives of our firefighters. We could read from a PowerPoint of all the mistakes, accidents, and near mishaps. However it’s important to create a human connection for brand new firefighters to the most senior fire chiefs. Your firefighters walk the path of the fallen and take a deeper look into what happened that day. Having the ability to participate in these staff rides provide such an important learning lesson to not have history repeat itself and helps create a closer connection to our fallen brothers and sisters. As we start off the New Year we would like to welcome 29 new Firefighter Trainees and wish them the best of luck on their 20 week fire academy. They start next week in Fire Academy 58 and will be welcomed into the fire family with open arms. Captain Jack Nosco is retiring after 37 years of dedicated service to communities of Ventura County! He’s retiring out of station 34 which is arguably our busiest station and Captain Nosco has made it look easy at the young age of 58. You should slow down during retirement sir. Thirteen year old, Sawyer Garnsey, was recently diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. Ewing Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that occurs in bones or the soft tissue around the bones that can spread (metastasize) to the lungs, other bones, and bone marrow potentially causing life-threatening complications. Sawyer has begun a very aggressive chemotherapy treatment. She has experienced some complications from the chemo which have resulted in additional days spent in the hospital. Thirteen year old, Sawyer Garnsey, was recently diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. Ewing Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that occurs in bones or the soft tissue around the bones that can spread (metastasize) to the lungs, other bones, and bone marrow potentially causing life-threatening complications. Sawyer has begun a very aggressive chemotherapy treatment. She has experienced some complications from the chemo which have resulted in additional days spent in the hospital. When you see firefighters around town, you’ll notice some obvious changes. We are taking all the precautions to make sure we are healthy and able to respond to your emergency. Our normal station uniform has had the addition of procedure masks and there has been a change to uniforms on 911 calls. For medical calls we are wearing EXTRA PPE. Our equipment consist of: Medical goggles Gloves An EMS jacket and/or medical gown N95 respirators. You will see our firefighters taking the extra time to don their PPE prior to any patient contact on emergency scenes. These necessary extra steps help our entire workforce remain healthy and ready to respond to the next emergency The extra PPE isn’t going to keep us safe alone. We are also taking steps to decontaminate our medical equipment on scene as well. Engineer 45 at the pump panel! Our engineers are our biggest safety net in the fire service. They make sure we get to calls quickly and safely when the alarm sounds. They also provide the firefighter at the end of the nozzle their life line, water. Here you can see our engineer breaking down his thought process of how much water he can send the firefighter on the hose line. Flowing water isn’t as simple as turning on a garden hose and getting what you get. We need sufficient amounts of water at certain pressures in order to knock down the fire and provide a safety for those firefighters inside of a burning building. This process can be even more complicated when flowing multiple hose lines varying in different diameters. When they do their job right, everyone goes home happy. When something goes wrong, it can be detrimental to those on the fire ground. Our engine firefighters focus on suppression and utilize our hose lines to extinguish the fire. It’s almost that time again!Here’s Squad 50 and our aviation unit from last year on a medical call in Lockwood Valley. Our firefighters, who are a part of our air unit, are invaluable when it comes to protecting and serving our citizens here in Ventura County. Our aviation unit has a permanent helicopter manager, two full time firefighter/crew chiefs, and multiple collateral crew chief positions for our firefighter paramedics. Our dedication to serving the county goes well beyond the minimum scheduled shifts each month. Two years ago, our community of Thousand Oaks was shattered by a truly horrible act that took the lives of 12 innocent souls. Today we remember them. In the aftermath of this shooting, we continue to train with our local law enforcement to ensure we are fully prepared to handle any situation. During probation, a firefighter is trained on all aspects of the job, but it’s important to remember after completing probation, the learning never stops. Brothers and Sisters Four years ago today, we lost one of our own in the line of duty. Ryan Osler was a friend to those who knew him and a brother to those that had the opportunity to work alongside of him. Over the past four years, members have created times to honor the memory of Ryan, coming together in a time of remembrance and fellowship, some on a memorial ride to the crash site, or on a boat attempting to limit on tuna. Others just take the time to remember Otter in their own way. Today, on the fourth anniversary of his passing, I humbly ask that all of us that were blessed to know him to take a moment not only to remember Otter but to reflect on the sense of unity and connectedness that we all felt while we were grieving our loss. The time following his death, we came together to comfort one another and lift each other up while we were hurting inside. We, as a local and as a department, are at our finest when we put each other's needs and concerns before our own; today, I ask that we do that again. To those who did not know Ryan, I ask that you remember the oath that you took, the commitment you made to sacrifice your own needs so that you can help others, both in the community and in the fire station. Four years ago, we suffered an unimaginable loss, but from that loss, we found something that united us and became what a real brotherhood and sisterhood should be. My prayer is that we never have to experience a loss like that again and that we remember to put others before ourselves. Stay safe, and remember to take care of one another. We are profoundly saddened by the loss of United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, IAFF Local-112 active duty Firefighter III / Paramedic Jose M. Perez who passed away on July 25, 2020 due to COVID-19 compilations. Jose was 44 years old and leaves behind a wife and three children.
